Age Grading & Combined Event Scoring

Age Grading is an adjustment for a performance (time, height or distance) based on age – the older you are, the bigger the adjustment. The adjustment, known as an Age Grade Factor, is multiplied by the performance to get an Age Graded Performance so all times, heights or distances for each event by athletes from 20 to over 100 years old can be compared to each other! The Age Graded Performance is the equivalent to what the athlete would have done when they were in their 20s.

Meet the Athletes

I ran high school track at Archbishop Molloy in Queens, NY from 1981-1985. Mostly 4 X 400M relay lead off leg. Ran a string of sub 51.5 and one disputed 49.5

Our family moved to Australia in late 2005. Wife Anya, three grown children (22,20, and 18)

I hung up the spikes in 1985 and did not run on the track competitively again until 2013, almost 30 years later at the age of 46. Knees are still strong thanks to not playing any hard rugby, football, or other contact sports.

Been slowly upping the workouts for 4 years following a blend of Bill Collins` book and a bit of Tom "The Tinman" Schwartz and also a bit of Jimson Lee but most of it is an experiment of one. I use an Aquajogger and hit the pool when the pain gets too much. My pain points are lower back and achilles, not much else though but hammys are tighter than I would like.

My main goal is to make the finals at Worlds in my age group for the 400M. Currently falling short at 57.93 and about 85% but feeling very healthy.

Joseph Phelan, AUS&USA - M57
